KURTIS
The Kashmiri kurti sits quietly between everyday wear and something older. Cut short, often in soft cottons and wool blends, each piece carries traces of the valley’s needlework traditions, the same vocabulary of vine, leaf and paisley that has moved across Srinagar’s textiles for centuries. Many are finished by hand, with motifs drawn from the same lineage as the patience of Sozni embroidery, scaled down for a garment meant to be worn often rather than kept folded. Floral borders, restrained palettes, the slight irregularity of stitches placed one at a time, these are the marks worth looking for, the same details that distinguish handwoven craft from machine-made cloth. To understand the wider tradition these kurtis belong to, read our note on Kashmir’s textile heritage.
