MEN SCARVES

A scarf, worn well, is a quiet thing. These shemaghs are cut from cloth woven in Srinagar workshops, then handed to a needleworker who marks the field with sozni and kashida — small, deliberate stitches that hold their line after years of folding and wear. The weight is meant for travel and everyday cold, drawn from Changthangi fleece carried down from Ladakh. For those new to the cloth, our guide to pashmina and cashmere sets out the distinctions, while the patience of sozni embroidery explains the hand behind each motif. If you intend to keep one a long while, notes on caring for natural fibres may be useful.
