Questions, answered

What is Kashmiri papier-mâché?

One of the oldest crafts of the Kashmir valley. Each piece is shaped, then painted freehand by a naqqash, a painter who builds the pattern up in fine layers of colour, often outlined in gold, before sealing it under coats of lacquer that deepen the colour and protect it.

Which size should I choose?

A 3×4″ trinket box (about 7.5 × 10 cm) holds rings, earrings and small keepsakes; the 3×5″ box gives a little more room. The cat boxes come in 3″ and 4″ sizes, seated, standing or curled up asleep. The trays suit a dressing table or a side table, the bangles are light to wear, and the square wall hangings come with a small loop for hanging.

Is every piece painted by hand?

Yes. Each one is painted freehand in Kashmir, so no two are quite alike and the one you receive will differ a little from the photographs.

How do I look after papier-mâché?

Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth and keep it away from water, direct heat and strong sunlight. Avoid sprays and polish; the lacquer needs nothing more.

What fits in a 3×4″ trinket box?

The box measures about 7.5 × 10 cm: room for rings, earrings, a pendant or a few small keepsakes.

Do you deliver outside the UK?

Yes. UK delivery is £4.95 and free over £60, usually in 3 to 6 days. International delivery is £25 and free over £200.

Is papier-mâché a good gift?

Yes. A trinket box, a cat box or a bangle is a small, light present that lasts for years with a little dry care, and you can add a gift message to your order in the bag or at checkout.
