Questions, answered

What is a Kashmiri pheran?

A pheran (also spelt phiran or feran) is the long, loose over-garment worn in Kashmir through the winter. It falls below the knee and is cut wide so it can go over another layer. A woman’s pheran carries its embroidery at the collar, the cuffs and the hem.

What size pheran should I order?

Every pheran here is one size, cut loose to go over a knit or a shirt. Each product page lists its length, chest, shoulder, sleeve and hip measurements, so compare them with a loose tunic you already own. If you are unsure, message us before you order.

What are your pherans made of?

Most are acro wool, a blend of wool and acrylic that is light, warm and easy to look after. Some are 100 per cent wool, the ones to choose for the coldest weather, and the velvet sets are made for evenings. The material is named on every product page.

What is the difference between aari, tilla and needle work?

Aari is a chain stitch that can cover a whole yoke and hem with flowers. Tilla is gold or silver thread laid at the neckline in paisley and vine. Needle work is a finer, flatter stitch around the neck and cuffs. The product name tells you which embroidery a pheran carries.
